the acids and other impurities present in the air that are mixed in the clean rainwater when it's coming down making it harmful and unfit for human consumption is called acid rain.

when the ph of rain water is less than 5.6, it is called acid rain. it is caused because , the exhaust of automobiles , contain oxides of carbon  sulphur and nitrogen which are acidic oxides and when mixed with rainwater , form the corresponding acids leading to the decrease in the ph of rainwater.
