Exact difference between empathy and sympathy

Empathy is feeling someone's pain because you have also went through that same situation and now when the person is in that situation you can understand his or her pain

Sympathy is just feeling for others pain and sufferings and the person sympathising doesn't really knows how it feels like to go through what the other is going through
