Portrayal of an unsympathetic society in Echikkanam's Comala
Comala is a very thought provoking short story by the award winning contemporary writer Santhosh Echikanam . The story is an eye opener to the hypocrisy of today’s media and their over popularising of small issues keeping the major issues eclipsed.
The media tend to make a mountain of a mole hill while reporting . For them representing news is a show business even if it is at the cost of common people’s lives.
The story of Comala is written on the pretext of the mass suicide of the farmers of Kerala due to the economic crisis in the post-globalised era.
Echikanam tries to portray the unsympathetic society of the elite towards the poorer section of society. Echikanam ironically adopts the name ‘Comala’ from the 'town of the dead' in Mexican novelist Juan Rulfo’s novel Pedro Parama.
Echikanam’s story revolves round a common man called Kundoor Viswan who is gulled by his friend . Viswan had acted as a surety of 50,000 rupees from Velloor Service Sahakarana Bank for his childhood friend Sudakaran.
Sudakaran had not paid a paise and with interest the amount accumulated to 90,345 rupees. Having no way out to pay the huge amount Viswan plans suicide and hangs a notice in front of his house, “On August 15th , 12a.m me and my family will commit suicide due to the debt caused".
This notice catches the eye of the Media. Instead of sympathising with him they treat him like cannon fodder. They immediately arrange for a live conference in News Times . It is participated by all the stalwarts of society like the Bank Secretary-Madhavan Nair, Psychologist-Dr. C Nanda Kumar, Officer from National Crime Record Research Bureau-Alex Punnose and Advocate-Fathima Begam and Kundoor Viswan. Viswan is made a scapegoat.
Instead of listening to his problems and understanding the agony faced by the common people, the unsympathetic society churn it into a gossip factory of entertainment. There are big talks and discussions, the media and the participants make a lot of money but Viswan remains as poor and helpless as before.
