Indian agricultural production increased under the Mughal Empire, during which India's population growth accelerated. A variety of crops were grown, including food crops such as wheat, rice, and barley, and non-food cash crops such as cotton, indigo and opium.

The performance of Indian agriculture under the British rulers suffered a lot as peasants became poorer due to their exploitative tactics, cultivators were reduced to just land tillers with absolutely no rights, farmers were pressured to produce cash crops for running their industries in England only and much of the produce was sent to the markets and was not meant for the village.
The faulty land revenue system made by them converted into agriculture commercialization and indebtedness.
As a result, farmers lost most of their land and mass poverty set in the agricultural sector.
