Last wave of annexations took place under Lord Dalhousie who was the governor general from 1496. He devised a policy that came to be known as Doctrine of lapse. According to this lapse, if a king died without a male heir, his kingdom would become the part of the company’s territory.
Many kingdoms was simply annexed by applying this doctrine
