Democracy has become one of the most cherished concepts in the litany of scholarly discourses. The effective practice and strict observance of the rules, principles and ethics of democracy and its values is a means of transforming societies to greater heights. The paper argues that Nigerian democracy since May 29 1999, has literally defied all purposeful and meaningful strategies for socio-economic and political survival. The paper argues from the context of free and credible elections which is a parameter for assessing the success and/or failure of a democratic system. Again, the author submits that the overall gamut of economic reforms initiated by government in the Fourth Republic has further implanted poverty, deprivation, inequality, reduction in human values and income per head as well as overall downward spiral of the already chequered Nigerian system as a whole. However, as a way of fizzling out of the prevailing circumstances, laudable policy recommendations were proffered to guarantee a sustainable democratic practice in the 21st century in Nigeria.
