Religion played a significant role during 18th century in France.

Catholic Church was prime and it boasted the administrative power as well as it was responsible for imposing taxes such as tithes on ordinary people of France.

However, with French revolution people of France realized that the church was exploiting them in the name of religion.

Thus, they become hostile towards the clergy and the Catholic Church.
