Throughout the early nineteenth and the early twentieth century women and non-propertied men organised opposition movements demanding equal political rights. The issue of extending equal political rights to women was a controversial one within the liberal movement, in which large number of women participated actively over the years. Women had formed their own political association, founded newspaper and taken part in political meetings and demonstrations.
