To determine if theforces acting upon an object are balanced or unbalanced, an analysis must first be conducted to determine what forces are acting upon the object and in what direction. If two individual forces are of equal magnitude and opposite direction, then the forces are said to be balanced.

Net force is classified as : Balanced force and Unbalanced force.

Explanation:

When more than one force is acting on any body, the resultant forces is calculated by adding all the individual forces by taking direction of the forces into consideration.

BALANCED FORCE

  • In the case of balanced force, the body is acted upon by forces in opposite direction.
  • When equal forces act in each direction, it results in zero net force. And the body remains in equilibrium state.
  • There is no acceleration in the body.
  • If it was initially at rest, it remains at rest and if it was in motion, it remains in constant motion.
  • Example: When a body is pushed from one side with a force of 5 Newton and also pushed from opposite side with a force of 5 Newton, then the body will remain in equilibrium state as both the forces will cancel out each other.

UNBALANCED FORCE

  • When the force of direction is applied only in one direction, the net force is non-zero.
  • Or when the forces acting on each side is not equal, then the net resultant force decides the direction of motion.
  • There is acceleration in the system as a result of non zero resultant force.
  • Example: When the truck is pushed in the same direction by many people, the net force acting on the system is the addition of all the individual forces. This results in unbalanced force. Unbalanced force causes the truck to move.
