let p(x)=3xsq + x - 1

therefore, p(-1) = 3*(-1)sq + (-1) -1

= 3*1 - 1 -1

= 3-2

= 1

since remainder is not zero so x+1 is not a factor

x+1=0
x=-1
3x2+x-1
3(-1)2+(-1)-1
(-3)2+2
-6+2
=4 answer
