What is the displacement of the particle?

sir please tell me how you arrived at this :

Second displacement is 2 m in the direction South-East to the point B .Hence displacement = √2 begin mathsize 14px style i with hat on top end style - √2 begin mathsize 14px style j with hat on top end style

Expert Answer:

Let us consider x-y coordinte axes such that x-axis in the direction West-to-East and

Y-axis in the direction of South-to-North.

If the displacement is 2 m in the direction of South-East, then as shown in figure,

displacement vector makes angle 45o with x-axis.

Hence if we resolve diplacement vector in x-axis and y-axis,

One component of magnitude √2 will be in +x-axis and

Other component of magnitude √2 will be in -Y axis.

Hence displacement vector of magnitude 2 m in the direction of South-East is written as (√2 begin mathsize 14px style i with hat on top end style- √2 begin mathsize 14px style j with hat on top end style)
