Example 4: Express the given information about the revolt of 1857 through a tree diagram
There were several causes and effects of the revolt of 1857. The people were oppressed by the various
policies of the British Empire. The Indian handloom industry suffered as the British sold their finished products
at a lower price. Indian farmers were forced to grow cash crops like indigo and cotton and sell them at a low
cost to the British traders. The British introduced the policy of the Doctrine of Lapse according to which if the
Indian king did not have an heir to the throne, his territory automatically came under the British Empire. But
the immediate cause for the revolt was the cartridges of the Enfield rifles which were greased with animal fat
and it hurt the religious sentiments of the people. The effect of this revolt of 1857 was that the Indians became
more politically aware. They understood the plans adopted by the British to gain power over them and started
to prepare for the Indian freedom struggle.
