Answer: x = a ; y = b

Step-by-step explanation:

Let us solve this by 'elimination method'

x/a + y/b = 2 .... (i)

ax - by = a^2 - b^2 ....(ii)

Multiply equation (i) by 'a^2'

(i)----  a^2x/a + a^2y/b = 2a^2

   =    ax + a^2y/b = 2a^2.... (iii)

Eq.(iii) - Eq.(ii)

a^2y/b - -by = 2a^2 - (a^2 - b^2)               [ax-ax=0 hence that term vanishes]

a^2y/b + by = 2a^2 - a^2 + b^2

(a^2y + b^2y)/b = a^2 + b^2                   [Took LCM at LHS. LCM is 'b']

[(a^2+b^2)/b]y = a^2 + b^2

y = [a^2+b^2]*b/[a^2+b^2]

y = b

substitute this value of 'y' in eq.(i)

x/a + b/b = 2

x/a + 1 = 2

x/a = 1

x = a

Hence, x=a && y=b
