Example 6. Hari has 10 coins in his pocket. The coins are of either Rs. 2/- or Rs. 5/- denominations. The coins
amount to Rs. 38/-. How many Rs. 5/- coins does we have ?

so 2x+5y=38......... (1)

x+y=10.,............. (2)

linear eqn.

2x+5y=38[×1]

x+y. =10[×2]

2x+5y=38

2x+2y=20

3y=18

y=18/3

y=6

x+y=10. [substitute y]

x+6=10

x=10-6

x=4

no. of 5 rupee coins :6

no. of 2 rupee coins :4
