Example 7 :
A solid is made of two elements X and Y. Atoms X are in fcc arrangement and Y atoms occupy
all the octahedral sites and alternate tetrahedral sites. What is the formula of compound?
Solution :
Na 8
v
Atoms of X forming fcc lattice means they occupy 8 corners and 6 face centres hence number
of atoms = 4
Tetrahedral sites = 8
Number of Y atoms = 4
Octahedral sites = 4
Number of Y atoms = 4
.:. Total number of Y atoms = 8
X:Y
4:8 or 1: 2. Hence formula of compound is XY2

Atoms of X forming fcc lattice means they occupy 8 corners and 6 face centres .

\sf\red{\colorbox{orange}{ Hence \ number \ of \ atoms = 4}}

\sf{ \rightarrow Tetrahedral \ sites = 8} \\\sf{ Number \ of \ Y \ atoms = 4}

\sf{ \rightarrow Octahedral \ sites = 4 } \\\sf{ Number \ of \ Y \ atoms = 4}

∴ Total number of Y atoms = 8

∴ X : Y = 4:8 = 1:2 .
