An example of a symbiotic protozoa is the Acanthamoeba. It is a free-living, microscopic amoeba that is a single cell organism. It can cause severe but rare infections of the skin, eye and the central nervous system of humans.
The amoeba is found throughout the world in all types of environment and in soil and water. It can also contaminate the eyes through skin wounds , cuts, contact lens use or by through inhalation from the lungs.
A majority of people may be exposed to Acanthamoeba during their life but it is rare that people may fall sick due to its exposure.
