I don't understand what u actually mean by the example of electrolysis of water but elctrolysis of water is done to break the compound water into its constituents that are hydrogen and oxygen ... It is not necessary that ot is always done for any use ..It may occur unknowingly ...

Perhaps the most familiar example of electrolysis is the decomposition (breakdown) of water into hydrogen and oxygen by means of an electric current. The same process can be used to decompose compounds other than water. Sodium, Chlorine, Magnesium and Aluminium are four elements produced commercially by electrolysis.
