When looking at the 3 states of a substance you see change in two way: a) the (average) speed of the molecules and b) the (average) distance between molecules. The solid state is always the coldest and gas-state is always the most warm one. Let's start cold: the molecules are moving (relatively slow) around in one place and there is (average) little space between molecules, so little they can not (or hardly) move past each other.

When energy is added the molecules will move faster and the space in between will grow a bit. This is why substances expand or retract when temp is changing. When the energy keeps coming there will be a point where the substance cannot ‘hold’ that stage and goes to the liquid stage. This transition is called melting. The added energy is transformed into the movement AND distance between molecules. The substance maintains the same temperature while in stage-change.

The type of added energy doesn't matter and could be several kinds of energy: radiation (IR from sun or lamp) ; kinetic energy (friction) ; exothermic energy from burning fuel; the higher thermal energy of another substance (ice cube in a warm soda drink) etc.
