Imagine you are lying on your back on the floor in the middle of a room and looking straight up at the ceiling with your legs shoulder width apart (more or less) and your arms at your sides at a 45 degree angle to your body along the plane of the floor with palms facing towards the ceiling. (This is called “anatomic position,” not that it’s critical to this discussion, but you should be aware of what it means for future reference). If you then move your entire upper extremity (from upper arm to fingertips) toward your body along the plane of the floor, this is known as ADDUCTION. If you move your entire upper extremity outward from your body (the reverse) along the plane of the floor, this is known as ABDUCTION. Even if your arms are initially hugging the sides of your body, if you then move them outward away from your body, it is still ABDUCTION. Likewise if your arms are at a 90 degree angle to your body and you move them toward your body, it is ADDUCTION. The same is true for the lower extremities. If from this position, you bend your arm(s) at the elbow (like your showing off your huge biceps - LOL) in a plane perpendicular to the floor along the midline of the body, this is flexion. If you then straighten out your forearm from this flexed position, this is extension. The same holds true if these same movements are made at the shoulder joint (best done with your upper extemities directly at your sides). So, if you bring your entire upper extremity up off the floor and pointing directly at the ceiling, this is flexion. The opposite movement is extension. At the knee joint, flexion occurs when you bend your knee so that the back of your foot moves towards your buttock. Extension is the reverse. At the hip joint, flexion occurs when you bring your knee to the chest. Extension is the reverse.
