Example of mechanical comparator

Explanation:

A mechanical comparator uses mechanical means to magnify small deviations. The way to magnify the small movement of the pointer in all mechanical comparators is by means of levers, gears, or a combination of these elements. Mechanical comparators are available with magnifications from 300 to 5000 to 1. They are used mostly for checking small parts machined at close range.

In mechanical comparators, the required magnification is achieved by mechanical joints and other mechanical devices, among which the main types are discussed below:

1) Rack and Pinion: Here the measuring spindle is integral with the rack and pinion, meshing with the pinion which expands the movement of the plunger by gearing.

2) Cam and gear: Here the measuring spindle acts on the cam which transmits the motion to the booster gear.

3) Sprocket Lever: Here, a sector gear lever at its end engages with a pinion in the hub of the crown wheel sector, which further engages with the end pinion to form an indication.

4) Compound Levers: Here the levers which form a pair with the action of a pound are connected by means of segments and a pinion to produce the final movement of the pointer.

5) Twisted Taut Strip: In this case, the movement of the measuring spindle tilts the knee and creates tension that further shapes the twisted taut strip to rotate proportionally. The movement of the belt is displayed by the movement of the attached indicator.

6) A lever combined with a belt wound around the drum: In this case, the movement of the measuring spindle tilts the connected block and creates a swing of the fork, which causes the drum to rotate.
