Examples of simile in Sarojini Naidu's poem 'Indian weavers' are:-

  1. "Blue as the wing of a halcyon wild"
  2. "Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green"
  3. "White as a feature and white as a cloud"

A Simile is a figure of speech which is used to compare one thing with another of a different kind for describing an aspect.

In the poem Indian Weavers the poet Sarojini Naidu describes the different stages of human life that are birth, marriage and death.

The poet talks about three types of dresses that the Indian weavers weave at three particular times of the day. Each time the dress weaved symbolises a particular stage of life.

  • In the simile "Blue as the wing of a halcyon wild" the poet refers to the robe of a newborn and its colour is directly compared with each other.

  • In the simile "Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green" the poet compares the wedding veil with the brightness of peacock colour.

  • In the simile "White as a feature and white as a cloud" the poet symbolises the colourless life. The weaver tells the poet that they are weaving shrouds for the dead person.
