According to the World Development Report 2012 categorized middle countries into upper-middle and lower-income groups based on the gross national income of the people.

For example, countries including Mexico, China and Brazil fall into the upper-middle income group whereas countries including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh fall into the lower-middle income group. Range of gross national income are used as the algorithm for placing these countries under the groups.
