If species have very similar niches, competition can be fierce. Different species of Caribbean anoles consume the same prey, but for a long time, several species of Caribbean anoles living in Florida did not directly compete for food, because each species hunted prey in a different part of the forest: tree tops, tree trunks or along the ground. Trouble erupted when the brown anole was introduced to Florida from Cuba and the Bahamas. It started to compete for food with the native green anole, hunting on the forest floor. To deal with this competition, green anoles shifted their search for prey higher up on tree trunks. Long-term effects on the green anole have not yet been determined.
