examples for inertia of rest include the following:

the passengers in a bus for backward when it starts suddenly this is because the sudden start of the bus brings motion to the bus as well as to our feet in contact with the floor of the bus by the rest of our body opposite this portion because of inertia so they fall backwards.

when a hot start study only the rider falls backward due to inertia of rest.

when we shake the branches of a fruit tree the fruits fall down due to inertia of rest.

we hit a carpet with a stick to remove the dust particles due to inertia of rest.

examples of inertia of motion include:

a ball thrown upward in a train moving with uniform velocity returns to the thrower because during the upward and downward motion the ball also moves along a horizontal with that leave due to inertia of motion hence it covers the same horizontal distance as the train does and the ball returns to the thrower.

a man jumping from moving bus falls forward you to inertia of motion as its feet touch the ground lower part of the body comes to rest while the remaining parts of the body keeps on moving. as a result it falls down in the direction of motion of the bus.

an athlete runs some distance before taking a long jump due to initiate motion sensor length of jump depends upon his velocity at the extent of jump.

  • Inertia of rest can be defined as the tendency of the body to remain in rest when it comes in motion. For example: when a stationary car starts to move the people/person sitting inside the car falls backwards.
  • Inertia of motion can be defined as the tendency of the body to be in motion when it comes to rest. For example: when a running car suddenly stops the passengers fall forwards.
