Electrolytic decomposition may result when electric current is passed through an aqueous solution of a compound. A good example is the electrolysis of water. Decomposition of sodium chloride on passing electricity through molten sodium chloride, it decomposes into sodium and chlorine.

Question:

Example of Decomposition electrolysis reaction

Answer : 2H_2O \xrightarrow{\rm \: electricity} 2H_2 \:+\: O_2

More information :-

Decomposition reaction is the type of chemical reaction in which a single substance breaks into two or more simpler substances.

Decomposition reaction is of three types :-

\implies Thermal decomposition reaction :- The decomposition reaction which takes place because of heat is known as thermal decomposition reaction.

For example :-

 2FeSO_4 \xrightarrow{\rm\: Heat} Fe_2O_3 \: + \: SO_2 \:SO3

\implies Photo- decomposition reaction :- The decomposition reaction which takes place under the presence of sunlight is known as Photo-decomposition reaction.

For example :-

2AgCl \xrightarrow{\rm\:sunlight} 2 Ag \: + \: Cl_2

\implies Electric decomposition reaction :- The decomposition reaction which takes place under the presence of electricity is known as electric decomposition reaction.

For example :-

2H_2O \xrightarrow{\rm\: electricity}2H_2 + O_2
