 Using this example given, in an orbital diagram seen below.


Find the 2p orbital, and you will notice that there are three boxes, this will be the same for each p orbital, d orbitals will have five boxes, and f orbitals have seven. because each of these orbitals have these spaces that are of equal energy , similar to seats on a bus, they are known as degenerate levels.
