An example of an explosive combustion reaction is the reaction between black powder (a type of gun powder) and oxygen. Potassium nitrate is also present, and acts as the oxidizing agent.

Answer:

a combustion reaction is a hydrocarbon (a compound made of a combination of hydrogen and carbon atoms). Oxygen must be present in order for the compound to burn. The products of combustion are almost always carbon dioxide and water.

Combustion Reactions

In 1885, the body of a woman was found in her kitchen completely burnt, but nothing else in her home went up in flames. What was more curious, investigators were unable to find any type of flame accelerant on her body nor evidence of foul play. Her body had seemed to spontaneously combust! While spontaneous human combustion has not been proven to be a real thing, spontaneous combustion of non-human objects is most definitely a real thing. Keep reading to learn more about spontaneous combustion reactions and two other types of combustion reactions.

different types of combustion reactions. We'll take a look at them below.

slow combustion reaction

Slow combustion reactions are combustion reactions that occur at relatively low temperatures. This type of reaction actually occurs inside of our bodies. Cellular respiration is a slow combustion reaction; cellular respiration involves the burning of glucose. Much like other combustion reactions, the glucose needs oxygen to burn, and the products are carbon dioxide and water. Energy is also released in cellular respiration.

Cellular respiration is an example of a slow reaction.

Spontaneous Combustion Reactions

Spontaneous combustion reactions occur when an object suddenly catches fire without being lit on fire by a match or other outside heat source. The heat to ignite the reaction is a result of a chemical inside the object oxidizing. Oxidizing occurs when a chemical reacts with oxygen. Coal tends to spontaneously combust pretty easily. As long as it has air (oxygen) to react with and the heat from the reaction has nowhere to escape to, spontaneous combustion is a possibility. In fact, coal has been known to spontaneously combust while being transported from one place to another.
