An object which moves in the positive direction has a positive velocity. If the object is slowing down then its acceleration vector is directed in the opposite direction as its motion (in this case, a negative acceleration)
An example of "negative acceleration" would be a car braking, or decelerating. If the car is moving in a "positive" direction, and the brakes are applied, the acceleration is pointed in the opposite, or "negative" direction

A body thrown upwards vertically. (gravity is then acting in the opposite direction)A body in simple harmonic motion. (Displacement is in the opposite direction to the acceleration).A stretched rubber band (the elastic force is opposite to the motion of the vibration) or a person on a swing.
