The oesophagus is a long, muscular tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. It's around 25cm (10in) long in adults. When you swallow food, the walls of the oesophagus squeeze together (contract). This moves the food down the oesophagus to the stomach.

OESOPHAGUS :
it is a muscular tube like structure about 25 CM . it extends from pharynx to the stomach. It passes from neck, Thorax and diaphragm. after swallowing partially digested food travels down the oesophagus. the oesophagus has no digestive glands and is not concerned with the digestion of the food. However, the wall of oesophagus secretes mucus which helped in lubrication of passing food. it exhibits peristaltic movement, I.e, a wave like contraction and expansion movement of muscles of oesophagus wall , so the partially-digested food is pushed forward . In fact, peristalsis occur all along the alimentary canal with the help of smooth muscles. oesophageal or cardiac sphinter helps to prevent the regurgitation of the content of stomach into oesophagus.....
