The exception to the Aufbau principle stems from the fact that some atoms prefer to have their higher level energy shells filled over their lower level shells to stabilize the unstable energy levels.
The exception states that if an atom has a 5s^2 4d^9 (or similar) configuration at the end, it would prefer to move the s electron up one level to make the configuration 5s^1 4d^10. This is a lower level energy state for the atom and therefore it's preferred.
