Transpiration is the loss of excess water in the form of water vapour by the stomata present in the leaf of a plant. But excess transpiration may take out all the necessary moistures from the plant body resulting in wilting or drying of leaves.

In some plants like balsam the leaves of the plant wilt during the midday in spite the fact that there is plenty of water in the soil. In such cases the rate of transpiration is excessive during midday than the absorption by the roots. The cells therefore loss turgidity result in wilting of the leaves.
