Chemical fertilizers are soluble in water. If a fertilizer is used and then there is rain that soaks the ground there can be runoff water. That water will contain chemical fertilizers and pesticides and be carried to a creek then a river etc. The chemicals do not evapourate easily so they remain in the water system eventually precipitating out as mud in the rivers. Thus, pollution is created and the crops are unable to grow properly.
