Exercise
1. To study the effect of temperature on the rate of reactions, a student mixed 10 mL
of sulphuric acid solution and 25 mL of oxalic acid solution in a beaker. The mixture
was then divided equally into four test tubes (A, B, C and D) and set up as follows:
1. Test tube A was placed in a beaker of water at 85 ºC.
2. Test tube B was placed in a beaker of water at 65 ºC.
3. Test tube C was placed in a beaker of water at 45 ºC.
4. Test tube D was placed in a beaker of water at 25 ºC.
Each set-up was left to stand for 2 minutes, then 1 mL of potassium permanganate solution was added
to each of the test tubes. The time taken for the purple colour to disappear was noted.
(i) Which set-up would show the least time for the purple colour to disappear?
(ii) State a reason for your answer in (i) above.
(iii) In the Answer Booklet, sketch a graph to show the relationship between temperature and time
taken for a reaction to take place.
