जवाहरलाल नेहरू छोटे बच्चों से बहुत प्यार करते थे। छोटे बच्चों के बीच वे अपने पद तथा आयु को भूल जाते थे। वे छोटे
बच्चों के साथ हँसते थे, खेलते थे और गीत गाते थे। इसीलिए बच्चे उनको चाचा नेहरू कहते थे। जब वह रूस गये थे, तब वहा बड़ी शानशौकत से उनका स्वागत हुआ था। एक रूसी बालक नेहरूजी से मिलने आया परन्तु पहरेदारों ने उसे रोक दिया।
बालक जोर-जोर से रोने लगा। श्री नेहरू तथा उनकी पुत्री इन्दिरा गाँधी अपने होटल से बाहर आये । लड़के को रोता हुआ देखकर
वे उसके पास गये और उन्होंने पूछा, "तुम रो क्यों रहे हो?" उसने कहा, "मैं एक विधवा स्त्री का पुत्र हूँ। मैं अपने गाँव से चाचा
नेहरू से मिलने आया हूँ। मैं ये फूल उन्हें भेंट करूंगा।" बच्चे के प्रेम को देखकर नेहरूजी बोले, "मैं चाचा नेहरू हूँ। मैं तुम्हारे
फूल स्वीकार करता हूँ।" उन्होंने अपना एक फाउन्टेन पैन उस बच्चे को दे दिया।
