EXERCISE 5.2
Find two numbers such that 3 times the larger exceeds twice the smaller by 10 and the
larger added to twice the smaller gives 6.

  1. Let x>y.
  2. 3x = 2y +10 ...(i)
  3. x+2y =6 ...(ii)

x=6-2y

Putting ii in i, we get

  • 3(6-2y) = 2y +10
  • 18-6y = 2y +10
  • 2y + 6y = 18 - 10
  • 8y = 8
  • y = 1
