EXERCISE 60
The primary function of a newspaper is to supply us with all sorts of news, local and foreign. It
gives us information of what
is going on in our own country, as well as in other parts of the world.
But for it, we would have to remain in total ignorance of the affairs of the world. It is only on
account of newspapers that we can closely follow the important and interesting events of the world
and keep abreast of the times
. As a matter of fact, a newspaper is a sort of contemporary history.
The benefits of a newspaper do not end here. By supplying information of the different parts of the
world, they bring them into close touch with one another and tend to promote friendly feelings. A
newspaper is also the best means of communication between the government of a country and its
people. The rulers and the ruled make known their respective view-points through the medium of
newspapers. The people can lay down their grievances for the consideration of the government in
newspapers, and the government in his turn can communicate its own views to the people.
