Answer :

  • The numbers are 9 and 45

Given :

  • One number is 5 times another
  • If 18 is subtracted from the greater , the remainder will be 3 times the smaller

To find :

  • The numbers

Solution :

  • Let the smaller number be x

Given, one number is 5 times another so,

  • Greater number be 5x

If 18 is subtracted from the greater , the remainder will be 3 times the smaller so it becomes,

  • 5x - 18 = 3x

According to question

➞ 5x - 18 = 3x

➞ 5x - 3x = 18

➞ 2x = 18

➞ x = 18/2

x = 9

Finding the numbers :

➞ Smaller number = x

➞ Smaller number = 9

➞ Greater number = 5x

➞ Greater number = 5(9) = 45

Hence , The numbers are 9 and 45

Verification :

➞ 5x - 3x = 18

➞ 5(9) - 3(9) = 18

➞ 45 - 27 = 18

18 = 18

Hence,Verified
