• Known as prairies in North America, pampas in South America, veld in Southern Africa and steppe in Asia, Temperate Grasslands, Savannas, and Shrublands differ largely from tropical grasslands in the annual temperature regime as well as the types of species found here.

• (i) The temperate grasslands of North America are called the Prairies. (ii) The cattle farms in the North American grasslands are known as ranches. (iii) The rivers Orange and Limpopo drain the Velds.

• Name the rivers that drain the Velds. The rivers that drain the Velds are Orange and the Limpopo.

• Summers are short and warm and the average temperature is 20° Celsius. Rain falls in the summer months (November to February) because of the warm ocean currents on the shores of the velds. Rain also falls in the winter months of July and and August, and there are droughts if rains are scanty.
