Answers
1(a)The three components of map are:
●Distance
●Direction
●Symbol
(b)Cardinal Directions are the most commonly used forms of direction.
The four cardinal directions are:
●North
●South
●East
●West
(c)The scale of a map is the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground. This simple concept is complicated by the curvature of the Earth's surface, which forces scale to vary across a map. Because of this variation, the concept of scale becomes meaningful in two distinct ways.
(d)A globe can be useful when- we want to study the earth as a whole. But if we want to study only a part of the earth, e.g. a continent or a country, it is of little help. Map is the representation or a drawing of the earth's surface or a part of it drawn on a flat surface. It gives more information than a globe.
(e)A map is a visual representation of an area—a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions, and themes. Plans are a set of two-dimensional diagrams or drawings used to describe a place or an object, or to communicate building or fabrication instructions.
(0)Large scale maps provide detailed information on which we can represent any part of earth like village ,town, country , state etc.
How do symbols help in reading map?
Answer:
Symbols give a lot of information in a limited space. It is not possible to draw on a map the actual shape and size of different features such as buildings, roads, bridges, trees, railway lines or a well. So, they are shown by using certain letters, shades, colours, pictures and lines.
