Answer:

Some of the hormones secreted by anterior pituitary gland are:

  • Growth Hormone: Also called as the somatotropin hormone. It affects the cells that undergo growth and stimulates growth by increasing protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Hyposecretion caused gigantism while hypersecretion causes dwarfism.
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone: In females, helps in the growth of ovarian follicles till ovulation and in males, helps in the growth of seminiferous tubules and in spermatogenesis.
  • Luetinizing Hormone: Also called as the interstitial cell stimulating hormone. Stimulates the development of interstitial cells in male and stimulates production of oestrogen and progesterone in females.
  • Prolactin: Stimulates the mammary glands for lactation. Previously called as the Luteotropic hormone.
  • Adrenocorticotropic Hormone: It stimulates secretion of hormones from adrenal cortex. Increases the concentration of cholestrol and steroids.
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: Promotes growth and proper functioning of thyroid gland. Stmulates secretion of thyroxine.
  • Lipolytic Hormone: It stimulates fatty acid liberation from adipose tissue. Hyposecretion causes obesity and hypersecretion causes emaciation.

Some hormones secreted by the posterior part of pituitary gland are :

  • Oxytocin: Initiates vigorous uterine contractions in females at the time of childbirth. Stimulates adenohypophysis to secrete prolactin.
  • Vasopressin: It causes contraction of blood vessels and increases the blood pressure. Helps in the reabsorptionof water from nephrons in the kidney.
