★ lubrication reduces friction :-
- when oil, grease or other substances are applied between the moving parts of a machine, a thin layer is formed
- between the moving surfaces and hence, friction is reduced.
- The interlocking of irregularities is avoided to a great extent by the application of these substances. Hence
- movement becomes smooth.
- The substances such as oils, grease which reduce friction are called "lubricants".
- In order to reduce friction we need to make the bodies streamlined which means the body that is wider in the
- middle & narrower at the ends.
- By polishing surfaces. As we know that roughness is the cause of friction. To reduce roughness, we need to polish
- the surface.
Ex :- We know that ,
- friction depends on roughness or smoothness of surfaces.
- To decrease the friction, we make the surfaces in contact, smooth.
Can you guess, why do we sprinkle fine powder on carrom board?
The Powder reduces the friction between the coins and the board so that the coins move smoothly on the board
