★ lubrication reduces friction :-

• when oil, grease or other substances are applied between the moving parts of a machine, a thin layer is formed
• between the moving surfaces and hence, friction is reduced.

• The interlocking of irregularities is avoided to a great extent by the application of these substances. Hence
• movement becomes smooth.

• The substances such as oils, grease which reduce friction are called "lubricants".
