On 15 August 1947, Nehru became the first prime minister of independent India. He held the post until his death in 1964. He implemented moderate socialist economic reforms and committed India to a policy of industrialisation.

Nehru implemented the five year plan which was a major step taken in his field of politics.

The first five year plan dealt with agriculture and it stressed the need of increasing food production. He adopted a strategy that included three components:- land reforms, agricultural cooperatives and local self government. Three types of land reforms were contemplated: abolition of Zamindari System,land ceiling and tenancy reform. He was successful in increasing the agricultural production. Then he followed the second Five Year Plan which stressed on industries.
