- Often a single party fails to secure majority on its own after an election and may not be able to form of government in a multi-party system. In such a case, some Parties join together to form a government. Such a government is called coalition government. Generally, a party which gets majority votes lead the coalition. Before joining the coalition, parties hold discussions and agree upon a common programme. In India, the first coalition government was formed in 1977 by the Janata Party. Consequently, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP formed a government at the centre in 1999. From 2004-2014, the Indian National Congress lead coalition called the United Progressive Alliance formed the government at the centre.
