aids is acquired immune deficency syndrome. it was reported in 1980s in young males having symptoms as svere pneumonia ,vascular cancer,weight loss,swollen lymph nodes and loss of immune functions.a virus names humman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) caused it.and the cells infected by HIV are helper t-lymphocytes.whih are the major component of immune system .so as this infection continues the t helper lymphocytes decrease in number causing faliure of immune system and tgus a person is susceptible to other diseases also.cells in central nervous system are infected by hiv also. and this virus is host specific that in monkey it doesn't causes infection.
it is transmitted by intimate sexual contact. and to the helthcare workers during their professional activities.
PREVENTIONS:
Prevention of intravenous drugs with common syringes and use of sterile needles and utensils is important.avoiding sexual contacts. and now vaccines against hiv has been synthesized and experimental administration in hummans started in 2001 in south Africa.
