Limiting Friction - Static friction that just balances an external force tending to slide one object along another.

The limiting friction is the maximum frictional force that can arise before an object begins to slide.

If an object is at rest ( or in uniform motion ) and a small force is applied on it . It will not move ( or change its velocity)

This shows that the frictional force equals the applied force.

If we increase the force , still it may not move . This shows that the friction has increased but again it is equal to the applied force .

If it continues like this no object will never move .

But it is not so. There is a limit for the increase of friction and beyond that it cannot increase . This maximum friction is called limiting frictional force .

When the applied force exceeds the limiting force , the object begins to move under the action of applied force - limiting friction . This resultant force is the driving force .
