Answer:

Anyone who is a student has often heard the proverb-‘the pen is mightier than the sword’. However, that does not mean that the pen is more powerful than the sword if two people are in a duel. It means that the symbolic significance of the pen is higher than that of the sword.

It also means that its shape, size or might can judge nothing in this world. As much as this proverb is held to be accurate, there are numerous examples where we might see that it does not work. In many cases, the sword turns out to be mightier than the pen.

It took three nations and their co-ordinated efforts to bring an end to the Nazis who were much superior in terms of both human resources and firepower. The continuous war that the US, UK and Russia waged against Germany resulted in the defeat of the latter and ensured the restoration of world peace. It is therefore essential to consider every proverb with a grain of salt. Its size cannot judge the might of the pen. Similarly, the power of the sword cannot be calculated by the length of its blade. Now that we are aware of the underlying meanings of both these phrases, we can explore the philosophical angle to it. Both the pen and the sword cannot work on its own. It has to be operated by someone. Someone has to pick up the sword to fight a battle. Similarly, someone has to pick up the pen to write something. Let us think about India’s independence. Some people took up guns and swords and took to the streets to fight against the oppressive British rule. Some people took up the pen to write the history and tragedy of the situation. There is no way in which we can say that both of these people have made unequal contributions writing against the British takes as much as courage as fighting does against them. In other words, every one had his or her unique way of contributing.

The might of the men, however, has often been a signature of impact without havoc. That is to say; people have brought about changes with the pen that they could not have possibly brought with the sword. Let us take up the example of Karl Marx. Marx, a philosopher, writes about the oppression of the working class by their masters and inspires people all across the world to rise against them. This can be best demonstrated by the October Revolution in Russia that was led by Lenin.

This is because everything in this world is detailed and situation-specific. If the case is such that there is no way in which the pen can work, then the sword is taken to have all the might. But, if the situation is such that it favors the pen more than the sword, then the pen certainly has the upper hand. What is more important than the pen or the sword is the one who wields it.

The person behind the pen or the sword is the one who makes all the difference. Some people give up the sword for the pen, and some people do the exact opposite. Therefore it is all about how a person feels about a situation and responds to it. The pen is always mightier than the sword, provided the sword lacks any might at that situation.
