WYSIWYG ( wiz-ee-wig) is an acronym for "what you see is what you get". In computing, a WYSIWYG editor is a system in which content (text and graphics) can be edited in a form closely resembling its appearance when printed or displayed as a finished product, such as a printed document, web page, or slide presentation.

WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get.
It's purpose is that it allows us to create a web page/web site without knowing the HTML language and coding.
It allows the developer to see what the end result is going to be before the document is being created.
The first WYSIWYG editor is Bravo, invented by Charles Simonyi in the 1970s. Other examples are word and excel.
