To expand the British empire in India lord Dalhousie established a new system known as Doctrine of lapse which says that if a ruler dies living no natural heir he can get only get private property of a deceased ruler and not his territory which would be hand over to British. This system were used to take away imperial titles of kings and princes. States such as Sambalpur,Udaipur
