Humans have evolved and have developed a huge brain relative to their size than other primates. Our current brain size is the result of millions of years of evolution that has helped us to gain a survival edge against environmental factors that threatened our existence. Throughout our evolution, our survival dependent solely on our decisions to stay away from danger and get food. Though this trend has varied slightly, our quest for survival remains anchored on our primal instincts to avoid danger and access to basic needs. Our life is still what we make it through our focus and how much resources and efforts we put to achieve these goals.
In our today’s world, humans have become the dominant species over all the other species and we influence their survival through our own actions. Our dominance has also created an interspecies competition that is not very hinged on natural and environmental factors, but our own criteria for survival. Many humans are no longer threatened by natural predators like millions of years ago but our very own competition to the resources that fuel our lives. Our population that has exponentially grown in the last century has exerted pressure on natural resources thus requiring our brains for survival. Our decisions determine our survival on each day and has continually shaped the reality of our future. This is the very literal definition of ‘life is what you make it.’ It is a phrase hinged on our decisions that we make daily to inch closer to the human definition of success and further away from environmental and natural factors that threaten our survival. Since the threat of natural factors has diminished over the years due to our ingenuity, the human definition of success and quest for more comfortable and better standards of living has become our new goals that define our lives.
The human definition of success has a fluid definition depending on the societal culture and the economic, political and social standards. But all humans around the world seem to be unanimously agree that economic capacity of an individual is his/her level of success. Economic ability is unanimously chosen since it determines the ability to satisfy the primal instincts of avoiding danger and dictate the level of comfort and living standards you can enjoy. The economic ability is a product of various other achievements such as education. Therefore, to achieve economic independence a person ought to make many decisions of the underlying framework to ensure they prosper economically. These decisions are those which determine the life you live. For those who cannot pursue education because of their own individual reasons increase their risk to attaining this economic independence and advantage that determines their life quality. Therefore, each decision comes with the weight of influencing their life quality at the present time or in future.
Since the definition of quality life is subjective across individuals and communities, each individual focuses on building his/her own life. The quality of that life is however solely their responsibility though the society might have a slight influence over it. Therefore, each individual focus on creating their latter life through making many daily decisions that have a significant effect of their future. The society might criticize an individual decision based on their definition of success but ultimately, the individual has the tools and power to choose their destiny. Additionally, failing to make a decision is also a decision that influences your future life quality. Nature takes its course and control the factors that surround your life thus determining the quality of your life. Therefore, making a decision is not optional, it is necessary to determine an individual later life.
Concisely, our brains determine our life quality through the decisions we make and therefore our lives are ours in making.
