i always go to local food joints when i travel ... so i write from my experience
The initial keenness was from the point of tasting local food & get a break from home food.
Got addicted instantly to the local tastes as there was so much on offer .. not only was the taste different from back home but the preparation, the mannerisms, the varied styles of eating. i got to learn the expert usage of chopsticks , the way you cheers during a beer session and this varies from place to place.
The local joints allow you a closer look at the local cultures ,being into photography it allowed me some great clicks .
note on some of the challenges you could get into :
- menu only in local language & no diagrams of dishes
- when you ask for someone - the person can only communicate in their local language
